Budget Solo Week-end Trip in Winter Tunisia

91st on my continuing saga to accomplish the #lakbay100 journey
January 04 to 05, 2019

My 71st solo backpacking trip13th country to visit in African continent91st country visited on my journey #lakbay100, 5th continent on my list and of course, usual budget do-it-yourself itinerary from arrival to departure. I did not research that much for this country due also on limited time and laziness.

Tunisia has a rich cultural history, ever since Antiquity. The Carthaginian Empire, Rome's arch enemy, was centred in Tunisia. Its capital, Carthage, is now a suburb of Tunis. Founded by Phoenician settlers from Tyre and Sidon (modern day Lebanon), Carthage was an ancient Mediterranean powerhouse. Three wars between Rome and Carthage (known as the Punic wars) were waged in the first few centuries before the birth of Christ.

Jerash Archeological Park Afternoon visit

Surprise Winter Christmas Week-end Get-away in Jordan
December 23 to December 27, 2014

How to go to Jerash Archeological Park;
The best and practical way to visit these both is to take a cab as the public bus is somewhat complicated and has limited departures only. You can negotiate the cab for around 40 JOD ($57) for a return trip to Amman with around 4 hours hired (45mins travel from Amman/Jerash, and remaining time for strolling). Entrance fee is 8 JOD, Summertime hours are 7:30 AM to 7:00 PM; wintertime hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Photography and video taking is permitted inside the park.

Jerash is known for the ruins of the Greco-Roman city of Gerasa, also referred to as Antioch on the Golden River. It is sometimes misleadingly referred to as the "Pompeii of the Middle East", referring to its size, extent of excavation and level of preservation (though Jerash was never buried by a volcano). Jerash became an urban center during the 3rd century BC and a member of the federation of Greek cities known as the Decapolis ("ten cities" in Greek). Jerash prospered during the 1st century BC as a result of its position on the incense and spice trade route from the Arabian Peninsula to Syria and the Mediterranean region. Jerash was a favorite city of the Roman emporer, Hadrian, flourishing economically and socially. The city began to decline in the 3rd century, later becoming a Christian city under the rule of the Byzantine empire. The Muslims took over in AD 635, but the final blow to the city was dealt by Baldwin II of Jerusalem in AD 1112 during the Crusades.

Rose Red City of Petra Archaeological Park

Surprise Winter Christmas Week-end Get-away in Jordan
December 23 to December 27, 2014

How to go to Petra Archeological Park;
The best and cheapest way is to travel via Jordan Express Tourist Transportation (JETT)  Bus. From Amman, it has a daily departure schedule of 0630H at only 9.5 JOD ($13.3) only. Travel time is around four hours. Entrance fee costs 50 JOD ($70). Schedule of departure from Petra is daily at 1600H for 9.5 JOD also. It is advisable to have 4 hours stay inside Petra to enjoy. Photography and video taking is permitted inside the park.

Perhaps the words of Dean Burgon's famous poem: "match me such a marvel save in Eastern clime / a rose red city half as old as time..." reflect some truth about Petra. Some archeologists have ranked Petra as the eight wonder of the ancient world - a truly justifiable claim. Petra is unique in every respect. You do not have to be a specialist in any field to appreciate Petra because, once inside it, you will be quickly awe-struck and you will  want to know the how, why and where about it. This remote dead city is one of the great archeological treasures of the world, undoubtedy; it is the most important famous attraction in Jordan. Much of Petra's appeal comes from its awesome, multicolored sandstone high mountains; it is secluded site of steep rocky slopes, towering craggy mountain top and high cliffs, into which most of the celebrated tombs, facades, theaters and stairways are carved... nature and architecture concur into conferring a mythical aura to the site.

Petra, the fabled "rose red city, half as old as time", is a well known ancient Nabataean city in the south of Jordan. Due to its breathtaking grandeur and fabulous ruins, Petra was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985.

Cappadocia 2nd part; Exploring Kaymakli Underground city

4-days Turkey Summer Solo Escapade
June 27 to July 03, 2014

Cappadocia 1st part; Hot Air Balloon above Turkey

How to go to Kaymakli Underground City;
From Goreme bus terminal, ride a minibus bound to Nevsehir on a 30-min departure interval and travel time for a 2.5TRY fare. Then, another minibus from Nevsehir to Kaymakli for a 3.5TRY on a 30-min travel time. Kaymakli Underground City entrance is just 300m away from the main road. Photography and video (with monopod & tripod) taking is permitted inside.

Kaymaklı Underground City is in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey. First opened to tourists in 1964, the village is about 19 km from Nevşehir. The ancient name was Enegup. The houses in the village are constructed around the nearly one hundred tunnels of the underground city. The tunnels are still used today as storage areas, stables, and cellars. The underground city at Kaymaklı differs from Derinkuyu in terms of its structure and layout. The tunnels are lower, narrower, and more steeply inclined. Of the four floors open to tourists, each space is organized around ventilation shafts. This makes the design of each room or open space dependent on the availability of ventilation. Kaymaklı is one of the largest underground settlements in the region. The large area reserved for storage in such a limited area appears to indicate the need to support a large population underground. Currently only a fraction of the complex is open to the public.

How to go to Aphrodisias Archeological Site;

Estimated to finish roaming around at least 3 hours to see the site entirely. All locations are easily walkable and within a square kilometer of area.

Aphrodisias (sometimes Afrodisias) is located inland in the Southern Aegean region, about 30 km west of Denizli. As an archaeological site, it contains some of the most impressive Roman ruins in Turkey, and has perhaps more bang for your money than Ephesus. Aphrodisias was named after Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, who had here her unique cult image, the Aphrodite of Aphrodisias.

The ancient Greek city of Ephesus was famous for its Temple of Artemis, which was recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The temple also known less precisely as the Temple of Diana, was a Greek temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Only foundations and sculptural fragments of the latest of the temples at the site remain.

Selcuk 1st part; Strolling the Ancient City of Ephesus

4-days Turkey Summer Solo Escapade
June 27 to July 03, 2014

Sabiha Gokcen Istanbul Airport arrival at night

How to go to Ephesus;
From Izmir airport, ride a train bound to Selcuk which has an hour travel time at 4.75TRY($2.2) fare. Upon arriving at the Selcuk train station, I walked around 500m towards the minibus terminal bound to Ephesus which departs ONLY on full seating capacity. Minibus ride was around 10mins with fare of 2.5TRY($1.2). Ephesus Archeological Site has entrance fee of 30TRY($14.3). Photography and video taking is permitted inside. Monopod is allowed while the tripod has to be surrendered in Security Office.

Ephesus was a former ancient Greek City before a messy period of conquest and reconquest and after the population was moved from Selçuk to the the present site. After that, Ephesus became a Roman city in 133 BC. Ephesus has developed into one of the most highly frequented archaeological sites, due not only to the excellent state of preservation but also to the visitor-friendly presentation of the monuments. The ancient site of Ephesus is seen entirely on foot. Pathways are signed clearly and easily navigated as you make your way through.

The so-called Theater Gymnasium was constructed in 125AD. The complex with over-all dimensions greater than 12,000sqm, conforms to the Ephesian type of bath-gymnasium compexes. U-shaped recreation and lobby halls surrounded the bathing rooms. Celsus Library, certainly the most well-known monument in Ephesus, was built 100AD by Gaius Aquila for his father Tiberius Celsus. The library actually be interpreted as a "heroon" which was built over the burial chamber of the deceased. The library was destroyed during an earthquake in 270AD and was not never rebuilt.

Bagan Day Tour last part; E-biking for Famous Temples at Night

4-days Self-guided Solo Tour in Myanmar (Burma)
February 02-08, 2014

I finished my day-tour around 1730H then headed-back to dormitory hostel in Nyang U road. The battery was still alive (started on 0830H, around more than 9 hours usage) even though it was abused on extensive off-road adventure by a first time rider ^_^. I surrendered this bike immediately then went for a shower, rested for wifi'ing then went outside again. I hired new bike (costs 2,500 kyat on agreed usage from 1900H to 2300H) to tour Bagan at night, have dinner and book my Mandalay bound bus trip for tomorrow.

Bagan Archaeological Zone is very safe to stroll at night, despite there was zero presence of road lights across Nyang U road. Actually I'm the only one that time who visited this places, I did not saw any tourists who aims for night shoot photos. I went back at my hostel around 2200H.

Bagan Day Tour 5th part; from Shwesandaw to Dhammayangyi Pahto

4-days Self-guided Solo Tour in Myanmar (Burma)
February 02-08, 2014

After visiting the Thatbyinnyu Temple, I visited tow of the most famous Pagoda's for initial initial intention of sunset viewing. But due to exhaustion, temple-out and hunger, I decided to just capture photo's and enjoy the remaining battery life of my E-bike before it becomes empty. Very minimal tourist along the road, though very dusty, this event was one of the most happiest adventure of my life.

Shwesandaw Pagoda - the highest Pagoda Tourists can reach (be very cautious of the stairway steepness) and the best place for sunset viewing. This was also the location the of surprise ticket inspection (15,000kyat for Bagan Archeological Zone 5-days pass) where I was caught off-guard, good thing I have this very vigilant and persuasive explanation.
Dhammayangyi Pahto - the mother of all pagoda's in Bagan. This is the largest and the symbol of Bagan Archaeological Zone.

Shwesandaw Pagoda is a Buddhist pagoda located in Bagan, Burma. The pagoda contains a series of five terraces, topped with a cylindrical stupa, which has a bejewelled umbrella (hti). The pagoda was built by King Anawrahta in 1057, and once contained terra cotta tiles depicting scenes from the Jataka. Enshrined within the pagoda are sacred hairs of Gautama Buddha, which were obtained from Thaton.

Bagan Day Tour 4th part; from Upalithein to Thatbyinnyu Temple

4-days Self-guided Solo Tour in Myanmar (Burma)
February 02-08, 2014

After visiting Htilominlo Pagoda, the following are the temples I visited in order of proximity.

Upalithein Pagoda - short visit and good photo-ops at the back
Rayangazu Pagodas - another set of pagodas
Hsutaungpyi Pagoda  - white pagoda. Beside I made a refreshments in The Moon restobar, spaghetti and fruit shake costs 5,400kyat ($5.4)
Ananda Temple - big white pagoda, great photoshoot outside
Thatbyinnyu temple - same with Ananda, road going Dhammayangyi Temple.

Upali Thein, close the Htilominlo Temple, on the other side of the road, is a good example of a sima or ordination hall. It is thought to have been founded in the mid-13th century and named after the monk, Upali. It is rectangular with a vaulted hall and an image of the Buddha at the west end. Its design is said to resemble many of Bagan's former wooden buildings.

Bagan Day Tour 3rd part; from Shweleiktoo to Htilominlo Pagoda

4-days Self-guided Solo Tour in Myanmar (Burma)
February 02-08, 2014

Shweleiktoo Temple is the temple famous for sunrise photoshoot over Old Bagan as well as Balloons floating which commence around 0515H-0545H. This was the initial and not so obligatory task to perform in enjoying the best of Bagan Archeological Zone. Arrive early as other tourists especially the high-end photographers tend to place themselves to the highest peak reachable on this temple. The higher you reach, the better you can photograph the stunning morning horizon. I arrived around 0445H with my cheater horse cart driver (with very, very slow movement), then parked in-front of the temple and stay inside (very cold with lots of mosquitoes) while trying hard to nap for a moment. Afterwards, I saw some arriving tourists with their rented mountain bikes and horse carts around 0515H. Being flashlight (mobile phone light is enough) as there is a very narrow stairway inside the Pagoda.

Bagan Day Tour 2nd part; Visiting the Shwezigon Pagoda

4-days Self-guided Solo Tour in Myanmar (Burma)
February 02-08, 2014

After the sunrise photoshoot, I went first to New Bagan (downtown) to search for a best and cheapest accommodation for a night. I saw Eden Hostel III located along Nyang U road, around 500 meters away from Bagan Bus terminal. Then, immediately hired an E-bike with standard price of 6,000 kyat ($6) but I negotiated it to 5,000 Kyat ($5) for a full charged battery day tour. My first destination was to take breakfast then bought a map as my tour guide to identify the Temple names and their location proximity. After breakfast, onward to one of the famous Pagoda's of Bagan and the look-a-like of Shwedagon Pagoda of Yangon, the Shwezigon Pagoda. Within the compound of the Shwezigon Pagoda is a stone pillar containing Mon language inscriptions dedicated by King Kyansittha.

Bagan Day Tour 1st part; Strolling Self-guided Tips

4-days Self-guided Solo Tour in Myanmar (Burma)
February 02-08, 2014

Yangon City tour last part; just off the streets

Marco Polo once described Bagan as a "gilded city alive with tinkling bells and the swishing sounds of monks' robes". Bagan Archaeological Zone was described by National Geographic as “one of Southeast Asia’s greatest archaeological heritage sites”, while Japan’s permanent delegation to UNESCO describes it as one of Asia’s “major historical landmarks.”

Coming from a Yangon night bus trip from 1930H to 0400H the following day, it is highly recommended to wear a jacket as the chill becomes intolerable on the time of arrival. Horse cart fare bound for sunrise shoot in one of the Pagoda's inside Bagan costs 15,000 kyat ($15). Due to a very sleepy status and miscommunication problem with the locals, I thought I heard the driver said only 1,500 kyat that was why I immediate grabbed the offer. I kept repeating the fare on him while we're on the way and he kept nodding pretending maybe to surprise me afterwards. But unfortunately upon payment when he brought me to my researched accommodation (walk-in only, no reservation), this was the time he declared he did not understood that 1,500 is different to 15,000. So that's it, I gave 15,000 kyat and I told him that don't be a cheater to any tourist especially the one traveling alone, it's bad and unfair to other kind and honest horse cart drivers.

Bagan, located on the banks of the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River, is home to the largest and densest concentration of Buddhist temples, pagodas, stupas and ruins in the world with many dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. It is estimated that as many as 13,000 temples and stupas once stood on this 42 sq km plain in central Myanmar.  Approximately 2,200 remain today, in various states of disrepair.

Gori Morning Visit Tour; Ancient Rock Town of Uplistsikhe

4-days Solo Trip in Winter Republic of Georgia
January 28 to February 01, 2014

The rock-cut city of Uplistsikhe or "The Lord's Fortress" is one of the oldest urban sites in the Caucasus. There is evidence that Uplistsikhe's vicinity was inhabited from a long time ago as the 3rd millennium BC, and the first caves were hewn out of the rock in X c. BC. The majority of the caves were cut during Classical Antiquity. The city flourished as a major religious, political and commercial center of the Eastern Georgian kingdom of Kartli (Iberia) during Hellenistic (III-I cc BC) and Roman times (I-III cc AD). Uplistsikhe consisted of three parts; It had a defensive wall, ditch, several passes, tunnel, streets, water pipes and drainage channels. Some structures were reshaped or carved out in the Middle Ages. At the summit of the complex is the "Uplistsuli Church" built in the second half of the X Century. This is a three-church basilica typical only of Georgian Christian architecture. The Mongol raids in XIII and XIV centuries marked the ultimate eclipse of the town, after which it was virtually abandoned.

How to go to Uplistsikhe;
From Tbilisi Didube Bus Terminal; ride a mini-bus going to Gori for only 5GEL ($2.9) for around 30-minute travel. Departure timings from Didube to Gori is every hour basis. Then from Gori, negotiate a cab for roundtrip (including waiting time for your park stroll and photo-ops) going to Uplistsikhe for 20 GEL ($12.6) max. All taxi drivers know this place. Travel time to Uplistsikhe is around 5 minutes only. Entrance fee for this park is 3GEL ($1.74) with park timings of 0900h-1600H. I strolled Uplistsikhe park on less than an hour only including photo-ops and a little bit meditation embrace.

Ruins of Zvartnots Cathedral

3-days Solo tour on Winter Armenia
february 22-24, 2013 friday to sunday

Echmiadzin monastery hopping

After finishing the Echmiadzin monastery hoppings in this morning whereas I attended also the mass. As advise, monastery visit is recommended to visit in the morning to witness how the Armenians perform the Catholic mass. I finished this part around almost 3 hours only from including the travel from Yerevan city. This is their another UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This marvelous temple is a result of skillfulness and brave creativity of Armenian architects of the 7th century. Having been built on several columns it could survive only till the 10th century. When in the beginning of the 20th century this site was being excavated many specialists could hardly accept its reconstruction model designed by famous Armenian architect Toros Toramanyan as it was difficult to believe that such a huge and complicated construction could have been built those days, and amazingly at that time one of the bas-relieves of St. Chapelle church in Paris came to prove Toramanyan's version; the bas-relief depicts Zvartnots temple with Noah's Ark and it looks like the model represented by the architect.

Agra City Morning Tour (The Fort & Taj Mahal)

solo traveling new delhi - jaipur - agra (india) in 1.5 days
may 18-19, 2012 friday to saturday

jaipur pink city by night tour

Traveling via train from jaipur with 2 hours delayed departure and arriving via agra fort train station, which is actually beside the famous agra fort tourist spot.

Agra is a city on the banks of the river Yamuna in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India, 200 kilometres (124 mi) south from national capital New Delhi. Because 80 percent of the city's sewage flows into Yamuna River, it is 20th most polluted city in India. It achieved fame as this remains a major tourist destination because of Mughal-era buildings, most notably the Tāj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpūr Sikrī, all three of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

New Delhi City Morning Tour (Humayun's Tomb & Red Fort)

solo traveling new delhi - jaipur - agra (india) in 1.5 days
may 18-19, 2012 friday to saturday

new delhi international airport arrival

After arriving in IGI airport in new delhi city, the subway going to airport express is just infront of Terminal 3. I notice, while walking towards the metro station, police/military visibility is almost 100% and I don't know why. Even how they frisk passengers its like I'm inside the airport. So again, just like in other airports I have been... after touchdown, go the visa arrival section, then exit the airport going to subway station just infront, simple as that.

Airport express fare from IGI airport station to New Delhi cost only 80INR (php67) for around 18-23 mins travel time surpassing 4 stations. Very, very effective and exactly similar to hongkong's airport express but not on the fare. From New Delhi station, I went to yellow lane for the start of my city morning tour, with minimum fare of 12INR (php10) only. From central secretariat station, the tour went on via do-it-myself basis....
