Collosal Abu Simbel Temples (Ramesses and Nefertari)

fearless 4.5 days DIY eid season solo trip to Egypt
october 25-29, 2012 thursday to monday

Abu Simbel temples are one of the best tourist spot in Southern Egypt. This temples are for Ramesses and Nefertari (King and Queens, husband and wife).

how to go here;
from Abu simbel downtown, the distance to the Abu Simbel temples is around 4 km. There is a minimal tricycles roaming around but I still prefer walking to feel the place. Just go straight on the main road until you find a huge billboard fo the temples. Entrance fee totals 95 EGP that includes the 80 EGP for the entrance on Rameses and Nefertari temples, 13 EGP for guide fee (which I did not experience to have) and 2 EGP for environmental fee. Opens daily from 0800H to 1800H.

Earliest departure of microbus (van) from aswan bus terminal going to abu simbel downtown: 0800H at 30 EGP only at 4 hours travel time (very safe)
Last departure of microbus (van) from abu simbel downtown going to aswan bus terminal: 1700H at 30 EGP only at less than 4 hours travel time (very safe also at night).

Photography is not allowed inside the tombs, and strolling can be enough at 2 hours.

The Abu Simbel temples temples in Abu Simbel in Nubia, southern Egypt. They are situated on the western bank of Lake Nasser, about 230 km southwest of Aswan (about 300 km by road). The complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the "Nubian Monuments," which run from Abu Simbel downriver to Philae (near Aswan). The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II in the 13th century BC, as a lasting monument to himself and his queen Nefertari, to commemorate his alleged victory at the Battle of Kadesh, and to intimidate his Nubian neighbors. However, the complex was relocated in its entirety in 1968, on an artificial hill made from a domed structure, high above the Aswan High Dam reservoir.

Around 2030H of this day I arrived in Aswan train station and immediately went to the designated platform for Luxor bound. Possible passengers told me that the train will depart at 2130H with 3 hours travel time. Again, I am just a change passenger, seating to a random seat which I think no one was reserved. I paid 31 EGP to conductor while the train was moving. I arrived in Luxor railway station at 0030H the following day then look for another spartan room which will fit my budget. I saw Ramoza hotel which is just 20 meters only from the station and 300 meters away to corniche where all the tourist landmarks are located.

  2. Wow, cool post. I'd like to write like this too - taking time and real hard work to make a great article... but I put things off too much and never seem to get started. Thanks though. Luxury Nile cruises
