vietnam, cambodia and laos 11th solo backpacking tour
august 24 - september 1, 2011 wednesday to thursday
objective: to visit the best tourist spot that fits to my budget at limited amount of time.
additional tasks: lost half of my pocket-money in day 1... show must go on for the planned itinerary no matter how it takes
champasak province (southern laos) solo day-tour
4,000 islands rainy biking (li phi waterfalls)
khone phapheng falls (pearl of the mekong river)
continued...
Pakse city was founded by the French as an administrative outpost in 1905, and was formerly the capital of the Lao Kingdom of Champasak and residence of the King of Champasak at Champasak Palace, which was abolished in 1946 when the Kingdom of Laos was formed. Since the construction of a bridge over the Mekong (built with Japanese aid), allowing road traffic with Ubon Ratchathani in Thailand, Pakse has become the commercial centre of southern Laos. The Pakse airport finished construction on November 2, 2009, resuming flights to Vientiane, Siem Reap and Bangkok.
i arrived in pakse vip bus terminal at 1430H with 2.5 hrs travel time for $8 fare from 4,000 islands mainland port. fortunately, the guesthouse inside the terminal gave cheapest accommodation comparable to nearby hotels. i checked-in first then spent some city tour by just walking around.
my original plan was to conquer another 3rd waterfalls to visit, located 35 km off pakse and a private tuktuk has to rented that would cost 250,000 kips ($30). yes, more expensive than a 12 hour transnational bus travel fare. i rejected the idea, it was way beyond my expectation.
not so much to see on this city, just stroll a little bit then rest. food trip at night buying also 1 can of beer lao, 500ml for 10,000 kips ($1.25).
day 3 expenses: (@ php43/usd & php0.005/kip)
* guesthouse at 1 night = 50,000kips = php250
* vip bus fare to pakse = $8 = php344
