Covid-19 Phase III Inactivated Trial Vaccine Journey in Abu Dhabi

The study focuses on the efficacy and acquired immunity of the inactive SARS-Covid-2 vaccine, developed by Sinopharm (CNBG), being done to determine how safe and effective the proposed treatment is for a Covid-19 vaccine. This vaccine is approved by UAE Ministry of Health. Some common reaction when receiving vaccine are pain, redness, stiffness and itching at the vaccine area. System reaction includes fever, headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. In general, these symptoms do not require treatment as they usually go away on their own without prescription / medication.

Volunteer participation quantity and duration - 15,000 healthy adults within 12 months of study. Registration requirements are the following; (1) must be healthy and 18 years old and above, (2) with valid UAE residence permit, (3) passed the assessment eligibility. You cannot participate if (1) pregnant, (2) have history of SARS / MERS infection, (3) had fever, cough, fatigue within the last 14 days, (4) with medicine allergy, (5) history of epilepsy, diabetes, asthma or any chronic diseases. Volunteers are free to withdraw in the middle of the study at any time and will not bear any responsibility arising from withdrawal.


Volunteers contribution to this scientific study will help fight and prevent the Covid-19 pandemic and save precious human lives all around the world #4Humanity. As a small token, volunteers will receive a Recognition Letter, 1,000 AED ($270/PhP13,000) worth of shopping vouchers and other giveaways. In addition, volunteers can visit all 7 Emirates with no border restrictions.

MY VOLUNTEER PARTICIPATION JOURNEY ON COVID-19 PHASE III TRIAL VACCINE 2020


Day 0 (08-Aug Sat): From Hamdan Street in Abu Dhabi, took the public bus #41 going to ADNEC with travel time of 40 minutes and fare of 2 AED. Upon arrival in ADNEC, assisted in registration area giving my Emirates ID. Handed-over a folder with some read-outs including the week-long diary. Received some SMS regarding the upcoming appointments. Checked the height/weight, blood pressure. 1st part was with doctor assessment for eligibility. 2nd part was blood extraction with 3 sets of vials. 3rd part was the PCR test (my 1st nasal swab test) and finally the 1st vaccine with 30 minutes stay in observation room. Freebie snacks provided in paper bag and 1st 300 AED shopping voucher. There are lots of volunteer Filipino medical staff.


Day 1 (09-Aug Sun): Someone from the medical team called for follow-up of my status. I only felt the minor pain on the vaccine area which is normal. No system (respiratory/general) reaction experienced.


Day 21 (29-Aug Sat): 2nd appointment for 2nd vaccination. Same process with Day 0 except no blood extraction (doctor assessment and my 2nd PCR test). Submitted my 1st diary and received another set of diary. Giveaways received include the Recognition Letter, paper bag of souvenir items and another 300 AED shopping voucher.


Day 24 (01-Sep Tue): Someone from the medical team called for follow-up of my status.  This time no minor pain on the vaccine area. No system (respiratory/general) reaction experienced.


Day 35 (12-Sep Sat): 3rd appointment for another set of test (doctor assessment, blood extraction with 3 sets of vials and my 3rd PCR test). Submitted my 2nd diary. This was my 3rd nasal swab test within the last 5 weeks. No more freebies and shopping voucher received.


Day 49 (26-Sep Sat): 4th appointment for doctor assessment and my 4th PCR test. Hope to receive my remaining 400 AED shopping voucher, hehe! This is the last face to face appointment, succeeding part of the program is telephone follow-up or in-person again if required.


Note: (1) All PCR Test (nasal swab test) results are NEGATIVE and received day after (2) normal living throughout, no restriction. I even join the 2020 SPECIAL OLYMPICS: STEPS UNIFIED where I made 340,935 steps (227 km) with ranked 1st among age bracket category, 5th on gender category and ranked 6th overall among 2,447 participants. (3) I completed 603 km folding bike cycling as August Cycling Challenge via strava. (4) I am one of estimated 1,500 Filipinos volunteer participant.
