Yellow Card (Carte Jaune) for Travellers Disease Protection

vaccinations required before entering countries in Africa and South America
updated as of January 2020

Known popularly as the Carte Jaune or Yellow Card, this is the international certificate of vaccination (ICV) as approved by the World Health Organization. Yellow Card is recognized internationally and may be required for entry to certain countries where there are increased health risks for travelers. Before departing for a foreign destination, a traveler must visit a healthcare provider and receive the required vaccinations, which the doctor must list on the form per the instructions and sign and date. The Yellow Card then must be kept with the traveler's passport as he or she travels, since it serves as a medical "passport" of sorts as proof of vaccination, including booster shots.

Currently, the only universally required vaccination is yellow fever. Yellow fever (yellow jack/yellow plague) is disease caused by the yellow fever virus and is spread by the bite of the female mosquito. It only infects humans, other primates and several species of mosquito. In countries where it is not required for entry, it may be a good idea to get the vaccination if travelling to endemic zones. After the primary immunization, boosters are required in ten-year intervals. One must receive this vaccination at least ten days prior to travel. Usual countries that require vaccinations are in South America (Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela) and Africa (Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Togo, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia).

HOW TO GET YELLOW FEVER VACCINE TRAVEL CARD IN KUWAIT (2014)

1. Visit the Ports & Borders Medical Division Expatriates Investigation Center aka Visa Medical Test Center (shown in map below). If you start from Farwaniyah, ride bus #34 or #41 going to Lulu Hypermarket then alight to NBK Bank (before Sabbah Hospital) just infront of this clinic. Travel time is around 30 mins with 250 fils fare.

2. Ports & Borders Medical Division Clinic opens every Sunday to Thursday, from 0800H to 1300H.

3. Go first to Room #4 in Ground Floor and consult the Doctor. Tell her/him your travel details (desired country to visit, on its rural/urban area, arrival/departure dates) and vaccines you wish to have. In addition, she/he will ask you also the medications/vaccines you taken. After around 5 minutes, the doctor will ask you to proceed to Room #9 for the vaccine injection and payment. I requested vaccines of yellow fever, anti-meningitis, anti-Hepa-B, anti-tetanus and tablets of anti-Malaria. The following are the instructions and vaccine duration stated by the Doctor;

YELLOW FEVER - valid 10 days after vaccination with validity period of 10 years.
MENINGITIS - validity of 2-3 years
ANTI-MALARIA TABLETS -1 tablet per week on full stomach starting 1 week before travel.

4. ENSURE to follow instructions given by the doctor before proceeding to this vaccines as this may have some side effects on your body. Buy stamp on the vendo machine outside the building, beside the entrance. Go back to Room #9 and hand-over the stamp and the documents requested by the staff to fill-up. I paid only total of 6.5 KWD = $23 (5kwd for stamp + 1.5kwd for all vaccines). The nurse will inject the vaccines, afterwards he will hand-over your yellow card with all the vaccines stamps. Go back again to the doctor in Room #4 to have her/him sign the yellow card. Ensure the "yellow fever" side is signed properly. You may now go home, expect some minor side effects.
